Governor Erby Eikner has authorized the expenditure of $2000.00 from the T/O District Disaster Relief Fund to begin a “Matching Pilot Grant Program aimed at working at community shelters. Initial testing of this program will begin in the Dallas Metroplex. Each club in this pilot area that chooses to participate in the program can receive $400.00 in personal care items to be donated to a local shelter of its choice. The program is a matching program with each the club and the District contributing $200.00. The items can be given to the club to sort and deliver or be delivered directly to the organization.
The purpose of the program is to give Kiwanians the opportunity to help citizens in their community who are in dire need of assistance and to also encourage new membership in our clubs. Our members will be given the chance to contribute to the local shelters by providing relief for victims of domestic abuse or homelessness. Volunteer opportunities may include:
Designing fund-raising events
Being a guest speaker to promote Kiwanis activities with the shelters
Occupy booths at health fairs
Volunteer drivers to pick up donated goods
Multi lingual volunteers to answer phones at the shelters or promote the programs in minority communities
The Richardson Kiwanis Club has added a new program designed to help kids whose homes have been destroyed by fire, floods, tornadoes or other natural disasters. We are purchasing backpacks in 6 different colors and dividing them by Gender and Age into 6 different groups. Then, we are packing the bags with school supplies, clothing items, small toys, teddy bears, blankets, toilet items and soap, and other items as donated by local merchants. Our club is looking for these items, as well as books and food items. These packs will be distributed by First Responders on the scene, such as local fire departments, Red Cross, Salvation Army, or our own Kiwanis Clubs. We are looking for volunteers who can help us grow this program so that we can help families in need on a moments notice. If you would like to be a member of the Richardson Kiwanis Club and work specifically on this program, please contact Marshall Kregel at firstname.lastname@example.org . If you are a member of a service club and would like particulars on the backpack program, contact me and I will send you our notes and some background information on successful backpack programs.
